FTP access using Internet Explorer 5 or greater on PC machines

Warning: Once you have logged into your account, it is your responsibility to manage the file structure (i.e. folders) in your account. Because you have FULL ACCESS to your account, accidental deletion is possible. Please carefully manage your account so different users from your group do not delete others' data. One tip is to create different folders for different users in your lab.

1. Open your Internet Explorer (IE5 or IE6) program
2. At the address line type in "ftp://dnacore.biochem.uci.edu:PORT# where PORT# is your assigned port (ftp://dnacore.biochem.uci.edu:29 for example). It will be mailed to you via email along with your username and password.
3. Then, IE5 will prompt you for a username or password. Enter them as given in your email. The server should let you in.
4. After the validation, you will see a folder call Chromas. Right click on it and move to "copy folder to…" and save it in a directory on your local hard drive. Hit OK and files will start to transfer.
5. Remember you only have to do this once.
6. Now, the other folders are named according to the date of the sequencing. Files in those folders are named according to the following convention:
  • Date_wellid_sampleid OR
  • Date_sampleid_wellid

7. Pick the folder you want to download and RIGHT-CLICK on it. Move to and click on "copy folder to…" then, choose the directory on your LOCAL hard drive where you want to save your sequence trace files. Click OK and files will start to download.
8. After downloading the trace files, go to your chromas directory on your computer and double click on chromas.exe. It should open a window. Click on files->open, and choose the sequence file of your choice.
